Looking at the Boston Globe on four screens confirms some of my inclinations regarding breakpoints for Responsive Designs.

The portrait orientation in particular shows that one design that scales up to a breakpoint somewhere between 640 and 768 makes a lot of sense. The Kindle Fire (600 pixels wide in portrait mode) works well with the same flexible one-column layout used for 320 pixels. Meanwhile, the 768 pixel wide iPad handles a two-column layout quite nicely.

It also clearly illustrates something I had undervalued until recently. The primary breakpoints should not be hard and fast. The page header seen on the Fire in portrait (compared to the one on the phones) shows the advantage of establishing additional breakpoints for key elements on the page. The same layout optimization is used on the phones in landscape mode.

It looks like there is some really remarkable interactive work in the The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center. I particularly like the tactile interfaces (rolling wheels, spinning globes, etc.) and the instant publishing into the space and on social networks. Nice work.

Understand yourself.

In the same way you can see growth from reading old entries in a diary, monitor your growth and progress through data.

There is a lot to like about this application. First, the idea is empowering -- let folks determine what data they want to track and then visualize it so that they can draw inspiration and insights from it. Second, the way it leverages twitter is clever.

This graphic novel will pull storyline and characters from the audience's comments on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. It makes sense that more and more content will be made this way in order to generate buzz and engagement.

I've been working on a way to pull links posted by twitter accounts that I follow and get them into Feedly (via Google Reader). What I do is pull out all the links, resolve them and build an RSS feed of links with the original tweet included. While I'm at it I filter out Instagram, Fourquare and Yelp.

Mon, 12 Sep 2011 09:28:00 -0700 Odopod acquired by Nurun http://davidbliss.com/odopod-acquired-by-nurun http://davidbliss.com/odopod-acquired-by-nurun

When I started Odopod with Tim and Jacquie, my personal intention was to do good work with great people. That was really it. I had just wrapped up an 18 month contract with Rare Medium after they aquired my first agency and I had a renewed respect for these critical aspects of work.

Over the past ten odd years, I've been able to live the dream. I've learned an incredible amount from our ever expanding team of incredibly talented and dedicated folks. Even at the most intense moments, I would not have traded this opportunity for any other -- until now.

The Nurun deal is a great opportunity for both companies and you can read more about our special chocolate-and-peanut-butter combination on our blog.

The strategic match of experience and talent between Odopod and Nurun is huge, but it was the people and our shared values that sealed the deal for me. Over the past months, I've met people from several Nurun offices and they all share the friendly, ego-nuetral personalities that characterize the folks at Odopod. What's more, they share a passion for strategy, design and technology working together to deliver innovative work that is useful and enjoyable.

I'm really looking forward to the next 10 years, working with our new global team, vendors and clients to do great work.

An incredible number of people have contributed to the success of Odopod success and I’m truly grateful for everyone's help getting us to the point where we could make this deal happen. Thank you!

The “multi-touchable” particle system was written by Hai Nguyen and is comprised of 2.4 million particles. The bulk of the math is performed on the GPU of course, using raw GLSL/FBO GPGPU techniques as opposed to CUDA or similar. The fluid sim is computed on the CPU using a custom solver and uploaded to the GPU as a velocity texture.

Yes, obviously ;)

Great writeup on an impressive project.

Tue, 09 Aug 2011 18:31:00 -0700 ‪AIR for mobile remote camera app‬‏ - YouTube http://davidbliss.com/air-for-mobile-remote-camera-app-youtube http://davidbliss.com/air-for-mobile-remote-camera-app-youtube

This video shows an AIR desktop app that is connected (peer-to-peer) with an AIR for mobile app running on 4 different devices.

The mobile apps stream video back to the desktop application and the desktop app can be used to send messages to the camera operators.

The devices tested all handle capturing and streaming 640x480 video at 15 fps. The wifi network is having a little trouble keeping up with 4 streams but works well with fewer streams (or when I'm alone on the network).

A summary of that information is now on our blog and the original slides which include a few additional examples are also avaialble.

Fri, 27 May 2011 10:57:00 -0700 Arc Diagram of Mentions in @Odopod Tweets http://davidbliss.com/arc-diagram-of-mentions-in-odopod-tweets http://davidbliss.com/arc-diagram-of-mentions-in-odopod-tweets

Lately I've been collecting and analysing Twitter data. I've been looking at networks formed by friends and followers of a set of people, tracking the path of tweets and generally building on my python skills.

I'm working toward a pretty ambitious goal but, inspired by the arc diagrams in the NYTWrites project, I decided to take a short break and render out one of my own.

Screen_shot_2011-05-27_at_10

Interactive Arc Diagram

The diagram shows all twitter users mentioned in tweets by @Odopod, sorted by the number of times they have been mentioned. The arcs link nodes that were mentioned in a tweet with other users and the width of the arc indicates the number of links. The size of the nodes represent the number of links a node has associated to it.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 12:39:00 -0700 Good Linking http://davidbliss.com/good-linking-2 http://davidbliss.com/good-linking-2

Cascade. Mining and visualizing big data and complex relationships is becoming more and more critical. The New York Times R&D department is on it, using Processing and MongoDB to dig into how their content lives in Twitter.

Speaking of Processing, version 1.5 is out with support for publising to Android. While reading about it here, I got tipped to the toxiclibs. Amazing. If this was around when I was in Architecture school, I would have had a lot more free time.

Lastely another procection. This week's is a giant whack-a-mole game promoting a rugby game.
